The tooth is cleaned from inside and the canals of the tooth are filled with an inert material like gutta-percha. Slender dental instruments called files and reamers are used for this purpose. Generally, the first sitting is performed under local anesthesia. The subsequent sittings do not require the use of the same. The next sitting involves cleaning and shaping of the canals followed by filling the tooth with a restorative material. For accuracy, multiple X-rays of the tooth are taken. Conventional RCT used hand instruments, which increased the chair-side time of the procedure. It was time consuming for both, the dentist as well as the patient. Advents in dentistry have now made it less time consuming since now the procedure is performed using rotary instruments rather than conventional hand instruments. Use of rotary/motorized instruments reduces the duration of treatment and increases its accuracy. Followed by RCT, a custom made crown is placed over the tooth.
The general view of patients that the treatment is painful is actually a myth. The entire procedure is performed painlessly.
